Torch ginger : a highly sought-after perennial of rare beauty.
The Torch ginger also known by its scientific name Etlingera elatior (often misspelled Etlingera eliator), is a rhizomatous perennial of rare beauty. It is native to Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia, and is one of the most beautiful tropical flowers. Belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, which includes plants such as ginger and turmeric, it is also known as Porcelain rose, in English-speaking countries and “baston de emperador” in Spanish-speaking countries. With its large, ginger-like leaves, it is often referred to as “tropical ginger”
The Torch ginger, a rhizomatous perennial
This herbaceous rhizome plant gives rise to stems adorned with brightly colored, cone-shaped bracts, housing delicate flowers in shades of pink, red or white. The inflorescence of Torch ginger, edged in yellow, gives the impression of delicate porcelain, almost synthetic at first glance.
If you dream of adding a touch of tropical splendor to your space, buying a Torch ginger is the perfect choice. This waxy flower and its floral essence blended with that of ginger will take you on a journey. Considered one of the most beautiful tropical flowers, it is highly sought-after and fascinating. Close to home, at the Tours botanical garden, a specimen regularly in bloom enchants visitors with its shades of pink.
The virtues of Porcelain Rose
Etlingera elatior has both culinary and medicinal virtues, making this tropical plant a harmony between well-being and nature.
Besides its striking beauty, every part of the Torch ginger is edible. From the rhizome, deliciously incorporated into the composition of curry and other dishes, to the flowers’ bud, which can be eaten raw in a salad, via the fruit. The unopened flowers are eaten raw, in stir fries, in sauces and in stews. In Singapore the buds of the Porcelain rose are named Rojak flower as they are mainly popular in a spiced fruits and vegetables salad called Rojak. In Asia, the roots of the Porcelain Rose are also used in salads or as an orthodox remedy, while the leaves of the Torch ginger are mixed with other traditional herbs (ginger, betel, …) to make a delicious infusion.
What is the symbolism of Etlingera elatior?
Beyond its physical characteristics and its many virtues, the Porcelain Rose has a special symbolism. Representing solid love and friendship, it adds an emotional dimension to its presence in gardens and cultivated spaces. Indeed, its rich, poetic symbolism sets it apart and makes it much more than a decorative graphic plant.

How to grow Ginger torch ?
Ginger torch is a particularly chilly tropical flower that does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. It is not recommended for cultivation in the open ground, even in the mildest parts of our Europe. Indoor cultivation is more suitable, such as in a heated veranda or tropical greenhouse. It requires warmth and light, without being exposed to direct sunlight. It requires a certain amount of space for cultivation, given its rapid growth and imposing size (up to 3m in pots or tubs). Space around it is essential if it is to flourish without feeling cramped.
How to care for Etlingera elatior
Care of Ginger torch lily is relatively simple. It involves regular trimming of wilted leaves and flowers, as well as copious watering. The soil should never dry out completely between waterings; it should always be moist. However, be careful not to over-water either, as this can lead to yellowing of the leaves. The Etlingera elatior doesn’t need pruning, as it has no trunk. As soon as the rhizomes start to emerge from the pot, it’s time to repot. On the other hand, if you want to contain its growth in width, you can prune the rhizome. Finally, in November, it’s time for a clean-up pruning. Cut back dry or drying canes, leaving 3 cm above the rhizomes.
